No man is an island?

This is the problem with living on a mountain in the middle of the woods. I have way too much time on my hands. I take a walk in the woods, or down the road, and my mind just can't be silent. Earlier today, I was recalling a conversation I had on relationships with a friend of mine about the pros and cons of being single on Valentine's Day, of all days.

The pros are pretty obvious. You can do what you want, when you want and how you want. There is no checking in, no answering to anyone. You can flirt with someone and not feel guilty. You can eat ice cream in bed, talk to the cat or neglect the dishes for two days. You can have your friends over until 4am. Basically, there is no pressure.

The cons are plentiful too. It goes beyond having a date for weddings and someone to bring to family dinners. It's nice to have someone to go to bed with and to wake up to. A person to talk to at the end of the day. Someone to snuggle on the couch with and watch a movie on a lazy afternoon. But, it's mostly just having someone there that you can depend on and trust.

He pointed out the biggest con of being single though. You get so used to taking care of yourself emotionally, physically and mentally that you can't imagine letting someone else be there for you. Essentially, you become too independent.
